Expressing “shock” and “anguish”, Goa Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai has sought detailed report from BITS Pilani Goa on the three suspected student suicide cases reported within the campus in the last five months.
The Governor has asked the Director of BITS Pilani, Goa to submit a report detailing the reasons behind the suicide and the measures the institute has adopted to prevent such incidents in the future.
Last week, 20-year old Krishna Kasera from Lucknow, a second-year student pursuing a dual degree in MSc chemistry and BE electrical and instrumentation, was discovered hanging from a window grill in his single-occupancy room on the institute’s Zuarinagar campus. The family alleged foul play and refused to accept the body.
“The Governor PS Sreedharan Pillai has expressed his shock and anguish over the news of suspected three suicide cases of students at BITS Pilani Goa campus in the last few months,” the Governor’s Office said in a statement issued on Tuesday.
“The Governor has sought a detailed report, on the reasons behind the suspected suicide cases and also what measures the Institute has taken, in regard to prevent such incidents in the future, from the Director of BITS Pilani,” the statement added.
In the first case, Om Priyan Singh, 21, a second-year BE computer science and MSc chemistry student from Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide in December 2024. Then in March 2025, Atharv Desai, 20, a third-year dual degree student, also ended his life in his hostel room.
Coincidently, all the deaths have happened during the examination period.
Following the incident, the Institute announced that it is in process of revamping the curriculum while proposing to offer flexibility to the students to appear for exams later if they are under stress.
The Institution has also informed that new courses on mental and physical wellness and stress management will be included in the revised curriculum. The institute has also initiated an internal review of the support system available to students on campus.
“We are revamping the existing curriculum, and a separate committee has been constituted to streamline the academic content. Students in distress under the current circumstances have been given the flexibility to take examinations at a later time. New courses on mental and physical wellness and stress management will be included in the revised curriculum. A Student Wellbeing Dashboard is being developed to provide personalised support and timely interventions,” the institute had said in a statement issued on Sunday.
The institute has urged students to take that crucial first step and ask for help.
