K’taka man sent to jail for Loliem temple burglaries

A man from Joida in Karwar-Karnataka has been sentenced to simple imprisonment for 68 days and a fine of Rs 4,000, after being convicted of burglaries at temples in Canacona taluka.

Canacona police had arrested Sameer Arya on charges of breaking into two temples situated within 50 metres distance of each other in Loliem-Canacona on the night of October 7, 2024.

Arya had allegedly broken into 6 donation boxes at the Keshav Devalaya and Damodar Devasthan, and had decamped with cash of Rs 25,000.

Police reportedly tracked the accused with the help of CCTV footage at the temple and the Loliem market, where the accused was noticed walking on the road earlier on the day.    

Police had arrested the accused under Section 331 (4) (lurking house trespass during the night) and Section 305 of BNS 2023 (theft in dwelling house or place of worship).

Police filed a chargesheet on November 29, 2024 and the judgement was delivered on January 3, 2025.

A court sentenced him to undergo simple imprisonment for 68 days and to pay a fine of Rs 4,000 under Section 331(4) of BNS 2023 and simple imprisonment for 3 days for offence punishable under Section 305.
