Margao market odour renews scrutiny of sewerage works

Sewage gushing out at the SGPDA stormwater nullah, raising a stink near the Old Market traffic circle.

MARGAO
Gushing sewage water at the Old Market stormwater nullah raised a stink, throwing up a contentious question – how come sewage continues to flow into the nullah 24x7 when the rains have stopped and work on the North Main Trunk line is completed?
Or, is it that the North Main Trunk line is completed, while certain stretches in and around the SGPDA market are yet to be connected to the underground sewerage line?
Well, pedestrians as well as motorists had to contend with unbearable sewage odour on Wednesday evening as sewage flowed into the nullah near the Old Market circle. The odour was so unbearable that pedestrians waiting to catch a bus going towards Ponda had to move further down towards the District Court’s side to avoid the smell.
Similarly, local residents have complained of the entire area being enveloped by sewage odour. Local resident Milagres Fernandes wondered how come the stormwater nullah continues to play host to water when the monsoons have retreated.
“The sewage flow into the Old Market nullah is posing a health hazard to the residents of Madel. The situation also shows that the government authorities have still not fixed the issues plaguing the sewage line after spending crores of rupees,” he said.
In fact, Milagres has demanded that the government come out with a white paper on the status of the Margao underground line, especially on the status of the underground line passing through Fatorda, the status of the work on replacement of the North Main Sewerage Trunk Line, and the status of the work underway at the SGPDA market to connect the market to the underground line,” he demanded.
