PANAJI: PWD Minister Digambar Kamat has directed that service roads must be completed before the commencement of any flyover or bridge projects in Goa.
During a surprise visit today to the PWD office at Baina and an inspection at Vales Junction, Dabolim, Kamat stressed that quality and timely roadwork remain his top priority.
He instructed contractors to ensure both service roads at Vales Junction are hotmixed by September 30. “My priority is to make the best roads. They have promised me that by September 30, both the roads will be hotmixed, unless there is continuous heavy rain,” Kamat said.
The minister also directed the PWD to prepare diversions for two-wheelers and cars by the same deadline. “Wherever bridge work starts, service roads have to be perfect. I don’t want any complaints from commuters. By September 30, diversions must be ready and certified by the traffic police before use,” he added.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, who joined the inspection, raised safety concerns after two recent fatalities at the junction. “Barricades must be fitted with proper lighting and reflective signs visible at night. This is a very important junction where many accidents have happened. My request is to make the barricades fool-proof, so people don’t enter restricted areas again,” Godinho said.
He welcomed Kamat’s immediate response. “The moment I called him, he agreed instantly to come. I am happy he has given clear instructions. Results are bound to be there by September 30. We will review progress around the 24th or 25th to see if the work is on track,” Godinho added.
