CANACONA
It is not often that government staff off duty or on leave rush back to duty without being asked to do so, and offer help when it matters.

Recognising his dedicated services to the Fire and Emergency Services at Canacona, Leading Fire Fighter/Sub-officer Ulhas Goankar has been chosen for this year's President's Medal.

Reacting to the award conferred on him, Gaonkar said: “The government has appointed us to serve the people, so it is my nature to work honestly and not to have any expectations while working.”

“If we do good work, our work itself will automatically create our identity. And that work and that identity define us, so if everyone continues to do their job properly, it will be good for everyone and for us as well.”

Gaonkar has been hailed for his commitment to duty. Even while off duty or on leave, Gaonkar has responded to any emergency that is reported, and would rush in to resume his duty and help in emergency situations.

In recognition of his dedication to duty, he has been honoured by the secretary of his own fire department, the Canacona Patrakar Sangh, Adarsh Yuva Sangh of Gaondongrim-Khotigao, and the organisation Pahat, Safe India, the Chief Minister's medal and now, the President’s Medal.
