The Global Konknni Forum has successfully concluded a three-week intensive and transformative course in Konkani (Roman script) for seminarians of St Pius X College Archdiocesan Seminary under the Archdiocese of Bombay.

Designed as a rigorous and immersive learning experience, the programme adopted a holistic approach to language acquisition, equipping participants with essential skills for effective and confident communication. According to the seminarians, the course was meticulously structured to integrate all core aspects of language learning.

It focused on listening skills to accurately recognise sounds, accents, and natural speech; speaking skills to build pronunciation, fluency, and confidence; and reading, which enriched vocabulary and strengthened their grasp of syntax.

The writing component played a pivotal role in enhancing their command over grammar, spelling, and clarity of expression.

A sustained emphasis on vocabulary development enabled participants to articulate their thoughts with precision and understand others with greater ease. The systematic study of grammar provided a strong foundation for constructing accurate sentences and eliminating ambiguity.

Significantly, the course went beyond conventional instruction by underscoring the importance of cultural context. Participants were introduced to the nuances of customs, idioms, and expressions, enabling them to communicate in a more natural, authentic, and meaningful manner.

A highlight of the programme was its innovative and highly engaging methodology. Classroom activities such as spontaneous speaking on assigned topics, group conceptualisation and enactment of skits, and on-the-spot translations into Roman Konkani fostered creativity, critical thinking, and confidence. These dynamic exercises not only strengthened language proficiency but also propelled participants to a higher level of communicative competence. Complementing this, exposure to tiatr and other Konkani cultural activities provided valuable real-world interaction, helping seminarians immerse themselves in the living language and connect with the community.

Conducted over six intensive hours daily, the course remained engaging and impactful throughout. The instructor’s integration of real-life experiences into the sessions added a unique dimension, enabling participants to draw meaningful life lessons alongside their linguistic development.

The course was conducted by Jose Salvador Fernandes, Secretary of the Global Konknni Forum, and concluded with a valedictory function at the Pilgrim Centre Hall, Pilar. On the occasion, participants — Nelson Mathews, Starson Gaurea, Joel D’Silva, Brayan Mathias, Shawn Gomes, Tejas Nunkauli, Joshua D’Souza, and Mathew Fernandes — were presented with certificates by Apolonia Rebello, Treasurer of the Global Konknni Forum.
