In a significant development, a third generation scioness of a Goan industrial house, Swati Salgaocar of Vasco-based V M Salgaocar & Brother Pvt Ltd, was elected chairperson of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Western Region for 2024-25.

In becoming chairperson of CII Western Region, which is a industry lobbying body with significant clout, Salgaocar -- who is the daughter of Shivanand Salgaocar and is President of V M Salgaocar & Brother Pvt Ltd -- follows in the footsteps of another third generation scion of a Goan industrial house, Shrinivas Dempo.

Dempo, who headed CII-Western Region a few years ago, was the last Goan to do so. He is currently the president of Goa's apex industry body Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Meanwhile, apart from Salgaocar being elected as chairperson, Rishi Kumar Bagla, who is CMD of BG Li-In Electricals Ltd, was elected Deputy Chair. The names were announced at the first meeting of the reconstituted Western Regional Council held on Friday.

A press release issued on Friday said Salgaocar and her team will be committed to spearheading initiatives across focus areas such as 'ease of doing business', cost of doing business and internationalisation among others.

Streamlining regulatory processes and fostering business-friendly environment to attract investments, identifying opportunities to cut operational costs for businesses through innovation and promoting sustainable practices besides ethical governance among businesses are some of the goals listed by the Salgaocar-led team as priorities.
