More Upper Ghats pilgrims head to Old Goa on foot

The group of pilgrims from Khanapur taluka which left for Old Goa on Saturday morning.

More groups from Upper Ghats region have begun their walking pilgrimage to Old Goa for the Feast of St Francis Xavier.

A group from Khanapur taluka led by the senior Jesuit Fr Benito D’Souza and other priests left for Old Goa on Saturday morning. The group began their pilgrimage from the St Ignatius Church, Sangaragalli.

Another group from Ajara, Watangi and neighbouring villages left on foot for Old Goa early Saturday morning.

“About 120 pilgrims comprising men, women senior citizens and children are accompanying us en route to Old Goa. All are excited to venerate our Goencho Saib. There is lot of enthusiasm among all the pilgrims and many more would be joining us,” said Fr D’Souza.

Parish Priest of Our Lady of Rosary Church, Ajara, Fr Melvyn Paes informed that about 100 pilgrims also set for Old Goa on foot on Saturday morning. 

Meanwhile sources from various parishes from Upper Ghats region will be joining these groups, due to which number of walking pilgrims is expected to rise this year.
