The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has prohibited transboundary movement of hazardous waste to facilities located outside the State with immediate effect.

In a circular issued, the GSPCB has directed the industries producing hazardous waste to dispose off landfillable, incinerable and utilisable hazardous waste through the authorized facility of M/s Ponda Envocare Limited.

“Accordingly, the transboundary movement of hazardous waste to facilities located outside the State is hereby prohibited with immediate effect, except with prior written permission of the Board in specific cases,” GSPCB member secretary Sanjeev Joglekar said.

State’s Common Hazardous Waste Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (CHWTSDF) at Pissurlem has been set up to handle the land fillable hazardous waste, incinerable hazardous waste and utilisable hazardous waste.

During a review meeting by the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) it was noted that there are 377 major hazardous waste generating industries in the State, of which 101 industries have registered with the Goa Industries Environment Management Association (GIEMA) but only 30 have executed the BI-partite agreement with Ponda Envocare Limited -- who operates CHWTSDF -- for disposal of the hazardous waste.
