In a rare and prestigious recognition, veteran Goan echocardiologist Dr Francisco Colaço has been named an Honorary Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography (FASE) -- a distinction awarded to only 30 individuals worldwide and just three Indians to date.
Dr Colaço, 81, who has been at the forefront of cardiovascular diagnostics in Goa for over five decades since beginning his practice in 1978, becomes the first Goan to receive this global honour.
“This recognition is reserved for individuals outside the United States who have made significant contributions to the field of cardiovascular ultrasound and inspired others through their science, leadership and vision,” stated his daughter Anabelle Colaco, adding that her father now joins a distinguished list of global pioneers from countries including Japan, Italy, Brazil, Canada—and now, India.
Speaking to The Goan, Dr Colaço said the honour was awarded in recognition of his pioneering contributions to echocardiography, consistent diagnostic accuracy, investigative excellence, and the positive endorsements received from both peers and patients.
For the past three years, Dr Colaço has been using the EPIQ CVx, a state-of-the-art cardiology ultrasound system, which he was the first to introduce in Goa. The machine enables advanced 3D and 4D imaging of the heart—enhancing diagnostic accuracy and offering insights across all age groups, from foetuses to the elderly.
“This technology allows for clearer, more consistent views of the heart, aided by transillumination and high-precision imaging,” Dr Colaço explained. “I’ve performed over 800 procedures using this system, many referred by doctors and hospitals from across the State.”
A strong proponent of continuous learning and technological advancement, Dr Colaço continues to upgrade his knowledge and tools. “Innovation is the key to excellence in medicine,” said the octogenarian, who also performs complex procedures such as Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE) using the latest imaging advancements.
The award will be formally conferred during the ASE 2025 Scientific Sessions in Nashville, Tennessee (USA) in September next year, where Dr Colaço is expected to receive the honour in person.
His recognition is not just a personal milestone but also a proud moment for Goa and Indian medicine on the global stage.
