The delay in the release of the autopsy report in the death of Moin Shaikh, who died by suicide days after allegedly being assaulted in police custody, has raised fresh questions, with concerns being voiced over possible discrepancies in the medical findings.
According to reliable sources, the initial post-mortem examination is learnt to have recorded multiple injuries on the deceased. However, a subsequent report is said to have described the injuries as simple in nature, prompting suspicion about whether the findings have been diluted.
Moin Shaikh was allegedly assaulted while in police custody between April 25 and 26 and later died by suicide on April 28.
His family has accused a police sub-inspector of custodial assault and abetment to suicide and has demanded the registration of an FIR and the officer’s arrest.
Following protests, Police Sub-Inspector Prathamesh Gawas was transferred to the reserve line pending an inquiry into the allegations.
However, the family has rejected the move as inadequate, insisting on his suspension and dismissal from service.
Tensions have remained high, with protests continuing for two days after the incident. Family members and local residents have accused the police of abuse and sought strict action against the officer concerned.
The family has also claimed to possess audio evidence purportedly supporting their version of events.
The delay in making the autopsy findings public, coupled with the reported inconsistencies, has intensified calls for a transparent investigation into the circumstances leading to Shaikh’s death.
