A youth was killed after he was struck by a moving train inside the Loliem tunnel on the Konkan Railway route in Canacona on Sunday evening.
According to reliable sources, the mutilated body of Yashdeep Gajanan Pagi (20) of Kundrem-Pedem in Loliem village, was found on the railway tracks inside the tunnel.
Pagi was a second year student of Government College of Quepem.
It is reportedly learnt that the family on suspicion of his sudden disappearance from the house, went in the direction of the railway tracks and on reaching the nearby tunnel found his mutilated body lying across the tracks.
The 835-mtr long KRC tunnel in Loliem is one of the longest tunnels on the KRC route in Canacona and is situated barely about 200 metres behind the victim's house, informed sources.
A police team led by Canacona PI Harish Raut Desai and Konkan Railway Police personnel went to the site and recovered the body before dispatching it to the South Goa District Hospital at Margao.
According to sources, the youth was to turn 21 in a couple of months and was reportedly jilted in a love-tangle. He is believed to have taken the extreme step out of desperation. He is survived by parents and a Divyang sister.
After an autopsy, Konkan Railway Police handed over the body to the family and the final rites were performed on Monday evening.
