For lovers of heritage and nature, here is a site you should not miss. Located in Bicholim, North Goa, are the age-old rock-cut caves dating back to 6th century. They are popularly know as the 'Pandava Caves'. As the myth goes, it is believe that the 5 Pandav brothers, from the Mahabharatha, found refuge in these laterite rock caves during their exile. This is suggested on the basis that there are 5 caves, and each cave has a Shiv-linga. According to another myth, the caves are believed to have Buddhist origins. Adhering to their buddhist architechtural style and a large statue of Buddha near by, it is believed that buddists could have accomodated these caves. For years, these caves have attracted tourists from all over for their mysterious and alluring demeanor.
Having made a trip this far into North, you must not leave out the Arvalem waterfall. Located just a few kilometers away from the caves, this waterfall is perfect picnic spot on hot summer days. The water falling off the mountains, is refreshing and cool. One can easily spend some hours over a few snacks and long chats, with their feet dipped in the water. But undoubtedly, the waterfall is the most beautiful during the monsoons, in the months of June, July and August. Moreover, the Government of Goa has also built a park near by. From there you can see the waterfall and set up your tents on a nice holiday! A trip to Arvalem caves will definitely be worth your time.
