CALGARY

From a handful of hopeful immigrants to a thriving cultural community, the Goan Association Calgary (GAC) has grown into one of the most vibrant Goan organisations in North America.

This year, the GAC proudly celebrates 50 years—a golden jubilee that honours the vision, resilience, and unity of the Goan diaspora in Calgary.

To mark the occasion, the Association hosted its kickoff event—Family Day & Membership Drive—on May 10, drawing families, elders, youth, and new members together in a joyful celebration of heritage and togetherness.

“It’s because of your efforts that we’re all here today,” said GAC President Vicki D’Souza, paying heartfelt tribute to the Association’s founding members, many of whom were present at the event.

Their foresight and passion laid the foundation for what has become a cultural anchor for Goans in Calgary.

The day was filled with warmth and energy. Guests took part in Carrom and Whist tournaments, engaged in senior-friendly exercises, and danced together in a lively round of line dancing.

Children contributed creatively with arts and crafts, and touched hearts with handwritten Mother’s Day messages that reminded all in attendance of the values that unite the Goan community across generations.

The Executive Committee also unveiled the official 50th Anniversary Golf Shirts, encouraging members to wear them throughout the jubilee year. The message was clear: this isn’t just a celebration of the past, it’s a call to carry Goan culture forward with pride.

And the festivities are far from over.

The GAC has planned an exciting four-day 50th Anniversary Celebration from August 1–4, 2025, with something for everyone:

AUGUST 1: The celebrations begin with a Thanksgiving Mass followed by a Meet & Greet in the Church Hall—a moment for reflection and reconnection.

AUGUST 2: Adults are invited to Cheers & Beers at Stonewall Pub—an afternoon of games, snacks, and fellowship in a relaxed social setting.

AUGUST 3: All roads lead to the GAC Golden Gala, the signature event of the year featuring a fusion-style dinner, with our DJ & Live Band BLACKJACKS.

AUGUST 4: The long weekend wraps up with “Susegad, Sports & Sunshine”, a family-friendly outdoor celebration with food, games, and laid-back Goan charm at the Montgomery Community Centre.

As GAC looks ahead to the next 50 years, the mission remains rooted in community, culture, and connection. What began in 1975 as a small initiative to preserve Goan identity in a new land has blossomed into a vibrant community that honors its roots while embracing its future.

“To the Goan community around the world—especially those with ties to Calgary—the GAC extends a heartfelt invitation: Join us in this golden celebration of who we are and how far we’ve come. Viva Goa, Viva GAC!,” added Vicki.

THE ASSOCIATION

This year’s GAC Executive Committee is being led by Vicki D’Souza (President), Hubert D’Souza (Vice-President), Alan Fernandes (Treasurer), Joe Almeida (General Secretary) and Marcus D’Souza (Member at Large).

Founded in 1975, the GAC is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting, preserving and fostering a better understanding of the culture and traditions of Goans in Canada.

The goal of the GAC is to provide members with opportunities for friendly social, sports and recreation activities.

Besides affiliating, supporting and cooperating with other Goan and like-minded organisations, the GAC provides information and assistance to incoming Goans.

“Members of the GAC have settled in Calgary from all over the world, calling it our home without losing our identity. Through our many events, we promote our heritage, culture and food – we are proud to call ourselves Goans,” said Vicki.

“As we celebrate 50 incredible years of milestones, memories, and community as the GAC, we’re also looking ahead. The future of our club is bright, and we’re excited to grow together, bringing in the next generation to share in our journey.”
