Goan defender Augustin Fernandes is one of the several Indians who have impressed the fans in the ongoing Indian Super League. On Sunday, the right back took his performance to the next level as he scored in Atletico de Kolkata's thumping 4-1 win in the away match against Mumbai City FC.
The Salgaocar player scored in the 76th minute to complement Iain Hume's superb hat-trick as Atletico stunned Mumbai with some superb finishing and their attacking brand of fatafati football.
“It feels great to score my first goal in the ISL in my first season itself. It feels great to have contributed in this win,” Augustin told The Goan after the match.
Augustin had only the rival keeper to beat after Sameehg Doutie made a brilliant cross to him and the right back kept his cool to tap home the goal. It was an amazing moment not only for Atletico fans but also for his fans and family back in Goa. “I think I did a good job on field today but I am upset that we conceded a goal. It's pleasing that I was awarded the swift moment of the match,” the 27-year-old said.
Agustin has been a solid presence at the back for Kolkata, but with Sunday's goal, he has now set a new target for himself -- scoring goals more often. “Yes. Whenever I get a chance to go up I like to score goals and hopefully I will be able to add more to my tally if I get the right chance.”
The defender credited his team-mates for securing the much needed win. “It was a very important to pocket the three points we got. After losing three consecutive matches, the win against Mumbai was a sigh of relief for us. Overall it was a team effort. Everyone gave their best and we won.”
