MARGAO

Winding up its election campaign in the twin Assembly segments of Margao and Fatorda with padayatras on Saturday, the BJP showcased its strength on the streets ahead of the May 7 election, with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant descending in Margao and Fatorda to accompany Margao MLA Digambar Kamat and Fatorda former MLA Damu Naik in support of candidate Pallavi Dempo.

The Margao MLA mobilised party workers near Lohia Maidan where party leaders took out the padayatra after paying respects at the Martyr’s memorial and to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia.

Chief Minister used the opportunity to rake up the Constitution remarks by Congress candidate Captain Viriato Fernandes, saying the people of South Goa will teach the Congress candidate a lesson for insulting the Constitution and the freedom fighters who had participated in Goa’s liberation struggle.

“People from India had joined the freedom fighters from Goa in the Liberation of the State from Portuguese rule. As it is, the Congress delayed the liberation of Goa by 14 years. And, now the Congress candidate is insulting the freedom fighters and the Constitution by saying the Indian Constitution was forced on the people of Goa”, Sawant said.

Digambar Kamat also joined Chief Minister in slamming the Congress candidate, saying Viriato has not only insulted the Constitution, but the architect of the Indian Constitution Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

“Dr Ambedkar has given the people of India one of the best Constitutions in the world. Viriato has no right to insult the Constitution and Dr Ambedkar”, Kamat thundered.

Kamat further said the people of Goa have already decided to give both the Goa LS seats to PM Modi, saying the poorest of the poor, irrespective of caste and religion have all resolved to support the Prime Minister.

Saying that the election fever has gripped the people of Goa after the visit of Prime Minister, the Chief Minister said the BJP will win both the seats without much difficulty.

BJP South Goa candidate, Pallavi Dempo said she is touched by the overwhelming support received from the people of South Goa to her candidature, exuding confidence of winning the seat with a comfortable lead.

The BJP leaders led by Sawant later entered Fatorda along with local leader Damu Naik to drum up support for the Pallavi.
