Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has directed the immediate halt of low-grade coal handling at Mormugao Port and asked the Goa State Pollution Control Board to issue a written order to the Adani Group to install a dome-covered facility to control pollution and foul smell.

The directions were issued during a meeting convened by the Chief Minister with Sankalp Amonkar, Daji Salkar and members of the Mormugao Municipal Council to discuss complaints of foul smell and pollution during coal handling operations. Mauvin Godinho was also present at the meeting.

Speaking after the meeting, Sawant said directions have been issued to Adani to immediately stop the handling of low-grade coal cargo at the port. “The Pollution Control Board will issue the necessary written order in this regard,” he said.

Earlier, Amonkar said the Chief Minister had given clear instructions that handling of low-grade coal cargo must stop immediately. “The Chief Minister has also directed the Pollution Control Board to issue a written order to Adani to install a dome facility similar to the one installed by JSW Group,” Amonkar said.

He added that the Chief Minister has also asked authorities to ensure there is no foul smell during coal operations and that no additional coal cargo is handled beyond the existing limits.

Last month, Amonkar had led a delegation of local residents to meet officials of the Adani company following complaints about foul smell during coal handling operations. During the meeting, he sought an explanation from the company and demanded a written assurance outlining corrective measures and a clear timeline to resolve the issue.

Amonkar said that the dome-covered facility, similar to the one installed by JSW, would significantly reduce dust pollution and odour during coal handling. Authorities have assured that stricter monitoring of port operations and compliance with pollution control norms will be ensured.
