The State government has formed a committee to study fish price regulation and examine the possibility of introducing a subsidised fish scheme to keep fish affordable for people in Goa.
According to the Fisheries Department, the committee was set up last month under the chairmanship of the Secretary (Fisheries). It will study existing market practices and suggest measures to regulate fish prices across the State.
The panel will examine price variations in fish markets and recommend steps to create a fair, transparent and stable pricing system. Officials said the aim is to protect the interests of fishermen, consumers and other stakeholders, while ensuring that fish is available to residents at reasonable prices.
As part of its work, the committee will hold consultations with different sections of society before finalising its recommendations.
These consultations will include representatives of political parties, non-governmental organisations working on consumer issues, fish traders and others involved in fishing, trading and fish processing activities.
