A resident of Karwar, who along with his accomplice, allegedly defrauded over a dozen locals by falsely promising them government jobs and siphoning off Rs 31 lakh from them, has been denied anticipatory bail. The case has also cast suspicion on one Damodar, attached to the Education Department.

Johny D’Costa, hailing from Karwar, is facing a First Information Report against him and his associate, Jwency Dias, a resident of Curtorim. As per the Agassaim police, the accused allegedly duped at least 17 job aspirants from Tiswadi, Ponda, and Dharbandora with false promises of government service.

The police submitted to the Court that as per the ongoing inquiry, Jwency created an account in a central bank, yet control over the account rested with the prime accused, who took her signatures on blank cheques for withdrawals. Jwency informed the police that the bank had the contact details of the main culprit, who claimed to her that he had been receiving money through contract works.

Countering the plea filed by D’Costa, the police submitted to Sessions Judge Sherin Paul that he had been evading investigation, and it is evident by the fact that a notice sent by post to his residence, returned without any reply.
