Ghumteshwar-Margao and Albert Developers won their respective matches on the opening day of the inaugural edition of Geno Prudent T20 Cup cricket tournament at GCA Academy ground, Porvorim, on Sunday. Ghumteshwar beat Badem SC by five wickets, while Albert Developers edged out Goa Police by four runs in the second match.
The opening match was played between Ghumteshwar and Badem Sports Club in the morning session. The tournament was inaugurated by Sonia Kuncalienker, General Manager, Prudent Media. Badem won the toss and elected to bat. Vaibhav Govekar was the top scorer for Badem with 49 runs. He hit four boundaries and one sixer in his responsible knock. Aditya Sooryawanshi was unbeaten on 25 runs, while captain Niraj Lotlekar made 20 runs to take his side's total to 134 runs for loss of five wickets.
In reply, Ghumteshwar reached the target of 136 runs in 19.1 overs, with five wickets in hand. Shivam Amonkar was the top-scorer and also the man-of-the match, for his performance of scoring 53 runs in 47 balls, that included eight hits to the fence. Vaishnav Pednekar scored 40 runs off 37 balls (4 boundaries, 1 sixer). The duo put on 82 runs for the second wicket.
Thereafter, wickets fell in quick succession before S Sarvanan played an important cameo as he contributed 27 runs in 15 balls, hitting two sixers. The man-of-the match award was presented by Kundan Fogueri of Fogueri Caterers and Kadambari Bhagwat, HR Manager,
Geno.
The second match of the day was played between Albert Developers and Goa Police. Winning the toss, Albert Developers elected to bat and posted a total of 145/7 in the allotted 20 overs. Amit Yadav with 34 runs, was the top-scorer while Robin D'Souza made 29 runs. Rajshekhar Harikant scored 23 runs and Sarfaraz Navaz chipped in with 22 runs.
Goa Police gave a good account of themselves in the chase, but fell short by four runs, as they managed 141/8 in 20 overs. Captain Chandrakant Ghadi was the top run-getter with 32 runs. Vinod Wilson scored 24 runs before being bowled by off-spinner Amit Yadav, while Avinash Gawas made 22 runs.
Yadav, who produced economical figures of 1/18 in his four overs including the final over where he gave five runs with 10 runs being the asking rate, after his contribution with the bat earlier, picked up the man-of-the match award for his all-round performance. The award was presented by Bala Sawant of Aakash Garments.
Dempo Juniors will take on Khorjuem Sports Club at 9.30 am while United XI will clash with Nityanand Sports Club at 2 pm on Monday at GCA Academy ground, Porvorim.
