Group D (Class IV) employees of Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim affiliated to the Gomantak Mazdoor Sangh on Monday went on a day-long strike protesting an acute shortage of sweepers as well as attendants and resultant exploitation of the nursing staff. As many as 700 to 800 sweepers, attendants and peons posted at GMC and TB Hospital, Tambdi Matti boycotted their duties and refused to report to work partly affecting the routine functioning of GMC. Speaking to The Goan, Dean of GMC Dr Pradeep Naik stated, “Upon receiving communication about this day-long strike, we issued instructions to our staff nurses to ensure smooth functioning of the institution. While a few planned surgeries were delayed, GMC patients did not suffer due to the strike.” Explaining the pending demands of Group D employees, Union leader Puti Gaonkar said, “Our three main de

mands include immediate filling of vacant posts of Group D employees, grant of promotion in a time bound manner and end to the regular harassment of employees at the hands of the medical superintendent of GMC.” Elaborating on these demands, Gaonkar informed that 93 posts of sweepers and attendants were sanctioned by the government four to five months ago. “These posts were advertised in February and applications were called. Accordingly, some 3,000-odd applications have been received. But since then, there has been no progress in the matter and no interviews have been scheduled so far,” he stated. It was learnt that 10 of these posts were filled on compassionate grounds and that 83 continue to remain vacant. Representatives of the Union held a meeting with GMC Dean Dr Pradeep Naik in order to seek a permanent solution to their issues. However, with that round of discussion remaining inconclusive, both the parties approached Secretary of Health Sudhir Mahajan. Following the meeting, Health secretary Mahajan handed over the charge of Group D staff to the Director of Administration of GMC with immediate effect. He also directed GMC authorities to expedite the process to fill the pending vacancies for 83 posts.
