The Jesuits of Goa Province and other NGOs have been collaborating at the ‘Martha Nivas’ in Saligao to serve the marginalised sections in and around Goa.
Martha Nivas is located near the market area of Saligao and was generously donated by Michael and Lelia D’Souza to the Jesuits for carrying forward their mission of serving the marginalised and less fortunate in and around Goa.
Honouring the noble intention of the donors, the Jesuits of the Goa Province have dedicated this house for multipurpose community use.
On October 7, 2023, the house was inaugurated by Fr Shawn D’Souza, the son of Michael and Lelia, and a priest of the Society of Jesus, and blessed by Fr Roland Coelho, then provincial of the Goa Province.
Now, Martha Nivas has become a centre of collaboration with other NGOs who share the vision and objectives of Goa Jesuit Social Action (GJSA).
The ‘We Care Trust’ and ‘Mama Nancy Trust’, which work with tribal communities, migrants, and women, have been closely associated with the GJSA to regularly organise supplementary classes for children and English coaching for women to improve their knowledge and communication skills, thereby empowering themselves and their families.
Supplementary classes for children
Supplementary classes are organised under ‘We Care Trust’ for the less fortunate school-going children to help them improve their academic performance and understanding of the different subjects.
These classes provide additional support to children, enabling them to perform better in school. The GJSA provides stationery and necessary study material for these kids.
Tailoring classes for migrant women
A tailoring training programme is organised for migrant women to help them acquire stitching and designing skills. The programme aims to create self-employment opportunities and financial independence among women.
The training began with the inauguration of the sewing machine by Fr Pedro Rodrigues, Goa Jesuit Provincial, along with Nancy Oliver, marking a new beginning in the journey of skill development for the participants.
English classes for migrant women
English-speaking classes were conducted by Stephen Azavedo to help migrant women improve their communication skills. This initiative is aimed at building their confidence and opening up better opportunities both at work and in daily life.
Despite working during the day, these women dedicate their evenings to learning the English language, showing great commitment and determination.
Along with lessons, the sessions also include light interactions and bonding activities that create a sense of community among them.
Priti, one of the participants, shared that she is learning English primarily because of her children. Since they are in school, she wants to motivate them and also keep track of their progress.Having studied only up to the 4th standard, she is now eager to reach the 7th-grade level, proving her perseverance and thirst for learning.
