Asserting that Goans are crying because of the government’s indifference to Mhadei, South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday hoped the BJP government will wake up from its slumber and protect the interests of Goa by stopping Karnataka from diverting the river.

He also demanded that the government abandon the track doubling project beyond Majorda saying the double track is not required on the Majorda-Vasco stretch.

Addressing the media, the South Goa MP said the government should take the people and the elected representatives into confidence on the Mhadei river dispute with neighbouring Karnataka. “When the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant led a delegation to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah, I was not even invited by the government even though I am representing the entire South Goa district in Parliament,” he said.

He added: “I was not invited to Delhi when the CM-led delegation called on the Union Home Minister. It was my duty and my right to meet the Union Minister since I represented half of Goa. The BJP government has no right to mete out harassment to the people.”

Accusing the government of shutting its eyes when the people of Goa are crying for justice and a stop to the diversion of Mhadei water, Sardinha asserted the nod for the Detail Project Report (DPR) is an injustice done to the people of Goa.

Reacting to the Chief Minister’s accusation against the Congress for the Mhadei mess, the Congress MP said: “Today, the BJP is ruling in Delhi and Goa. I want to ask the Chief Minister why he did not know the DPR has been given in favour of Karnataka.”
