Despite arrests, villagers vow to continue Mirabag protest

Despite the arrest of four activists who raised the issue of the proposed bandhara construction at Mirabag, Sanvordem, from the visitors’ gallery of the Goa Assembly, villagers continued their protest and said they would not give in to pressure. The protestors reiterated that the agitation will continue unless the government gives a written assurance that the bandhara project will be withdrawn.

Former Sanvordem MLA Deepak Pauskar, who has taken a leading role in the agitation in recent days, alleged that the government will not respond to the demands of the people unless it is compelled through protests. He claimed that the government lacks moral responsibility and does not understand the problems faced by the people. He further stated that those in power are more concerned about their personal interests.

Village youth Sanket Bhandari, who has been leading the movement since the start of the agitation, said the villagers are proud of the four activists who raised the bandhara issue inside the Assembly without fearing action from the ruling government. He added that more such activists should come forward across Goa to oppose what he described as the unjust actions of the BJP-led government against the people.

Bhandari also thanked the market association of Curchorem for supporting the agitation by keeping their shops closed for half an hour on Saturday. He said the shopkeepers have assured the protestors of their continued support and cooperation whenever needed.
