Even as the post-mortem report has stated that 64-year-old Teofolio Cardozo died due to drowning, residents of Cavelossim have demanded a detailed investigation into the case.
Local residents, led by Sarpanch Dixon Vaz and ward member Iris Passanha, said the incident does not appear to be a simple case of drowning and have raised suspicion of foul play. They alleged that the deceased may have been strangled, pointing to the presence of a nylon rope around his neck before the body was found in the well.
The Sarpanch has appealed to South Goa Superintendent of Police Santosh Desai to conduct a thorough probe and not close the case as a death due to drowning.
“The circumstances surrounding the death have raised doubts. The body was found in the well with a nylon rope around the neck and a chair nearby, which has created suspicion about the exact cause of death. Though the post-mortem report has stated that the death was due to drowning, we are demanding a detailed inquiry into the incident,” Dixon said.
Police officials said Colva police have begun an inquiry after registering a case of unnatural death.
“Although the post-mortem report states that the death was caused by drowning, police are investigating the case from all angles,” a senior police officer said.
