The Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan ( GRLA) has disputed Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s statement that the government jobs selection is done on merits by the Goa State Selection Commission (GSSC), terming the statement as false and done with an intent to mislead the people of Goa.
GRLA president Kennedy Afonso said the candidates from Marathi medium schools do not get jobs on merit, but because the exam paper is set in favour of candidates from one community only.
“The CM made a mind boggling statement in the Goa Legislative Assembly, that out of 2500 candidates selected through the Goa Staff Selection Commission (GSSC), nearly 2000 students from Marathi medium schools were selected on merit, and not on the basis of medium of instructions. In other words only around 500 candidates who had studied in English medium schools, and got selected for govt jobs, and the rest did not qualify”, he wondered.
He added: “These glaring numbers expose the hidden fact, that there is something seriously wrong in the examination papers, and methods used by the GSSC to select candidates for government jobs".
The Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan stated that by making it compulsory to answer Konknni paper in Devnagri script only, the GSSC has guaranteed that the exam papers favoured the candidates coming from the majority community, whose preferred script is Devanagri. “Every candidate is required to answer the exam paper in Konknni in Devanagri and this is where the catch lies.
Candidates from the majority community, who have studied in Marathi medium can easily score good marks in the Devnagri Konknni paper, where as the minority community candidates, who have studied in English medium schools find it difficult to score good marks in Devnagri Konknni paper. This gives the candidates who studied in Marathi medium an edge, over candidates who studied in English medium schools, and answered the paper in Devnagri. This is a clever trick deployed by the GSSC to deprive minority community candidates from getting selected at the exam, and getting govt jobs,” Afonso said.
Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan demanded that the government should direct the GSSC to set the Konknni language question paper in both Devnagri and Romi Konknni, to rectify this discrimination.
The Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan will be highlighting all these issues plaguing the Konknni language, in their first Historic Literature and Cultural Maha Samellan scheduled on 30 May 2026.
