With Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led cabinet seized of the matter, the Goa government on Friday refused to have any discussion on the ongoing tariff row between India and US after President Donald Trump announced extra 25 per cent levies on imports from India over New Delhi’s oil trade with Russia. This raised the total US tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent.
MLA Viresh Borkar had moved a Calling Attention motion in this regard. He pointed out that the move is likely to make Indian, particularly Goan exports significantly costlier in the US market, severely affecting competitiveness and profitability. Export-oriented industries fear loss of orders, decline in revenue, and potential job losses as a result.
Responding to the Motion, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the Government of India is already seized of the various issues regarding US’s decision to impose an additional 25 per cent tariff on goods imported from India, taking the total tariff to 50 per cent on certain goods.
