Move to tackle persistent parking chaos in city
Marking taken up at designated zones in Vasco for pay parking.

In a bid to streamline traffic flow and tackle the persistent parking chaos in Vasco, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has introduced a pay parking system in select key locations around the city.
The new system covers areas near the MMC building and the Vasco post office, where both private and commercial four-wheelers — including rent-a-car and rent-a-bike vehicles — will now be charged Rs 20 for the first hour and Rs 15 for every subsequent hour.
Speaking to reporters, MMC Chairperson Girish Borkar said the council had passed a resolution to implement pay parking around 10 months ago and recently received the formal notification from the South Goa Collector.
“We have already begun marking the designated parking zones. This move is expected to bring order to the current haphazard parking situation in Vasco, where vehicles are often left unattended for hours or even days,” Borkar stated.
He added that the initiative is being launched on a trial basis at four strategic locations, with plans to expand if needed.
“We are also witnessing a surge in rent-a-car vehicles parked on busy lanes. We've requested the RTO and Traffic Department to intervene and enforce appropriate action. The pay-parking rates will also apply to these commercial vehicles,” he said.
Borkar emphasised that the council had worked closely with the Vasco traffic cell to finalise the fee structure and would soon float a tender to appoint a contractor for the operation and management of the pay parking system.
Vehicles found parked without paying the applicable charges will be towed, he warned.
