With National Games expected to take place in Goa in February last year, the status quo of the readiness of the state to organize the prestigious sporting event comes to the fore.

According to a source, Goa will play host to 30 sports disciplines at the National Games next year.
These sports include Aquatics, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Beach Handball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Canoeing/ Kayaking, Cycling, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kho-Kho, Netball, Rowing, Shooting, Squash, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Yachting.
The proposed venues to host these sports disciplines include Campal Sports Complex (Indoor Hall), Campal Open Ground, Ponda Sports Complex, Swimming Pool, Fatorda facilities which need to be refurbished.
Besides proposed facilities to be newly constructed are Tennis Courts at Campal Sports Complex. Facilities to be erected through overlays have been proposed at Colvale, Dona Paula and Miramar Beach.
At the existing venues, sports disciplines are proposed to be held at GMC Athletics Stadium, SPM Stadium, Goa University, Badminton Hall at Peddem, Multipurpose Indoor Hall at Peddem, Boxing Hall at Peddem, Tilak Maidan and PJN Stadium at Fatorda. But the creation of new infrastructure is subject to confirmation of National Games by the Indian Olympic Association to be held next year.
According to The Goan sources, the execution of developmental works is still on. The development of Navelim Sports Complex is under construction.
The consultants for all the projects, except for a Squash facility at Chicalim Sports Complex are on board. Meanwhile, the works for refurbishment of Fatorda swimming Pool and for Development of Hockey Facility at Peddem Sports Complex have been tendered and L1 has been identified.
It is understood that a Project Management Consultant would be brought on board shortly, after which all the other projects would be placed under the Expenditure Finance Committee.
The time frame by which the infrastructure will be completed is estimated to take between 300 to 350 days from issue of Work Order.
