Finally, the top slab on the new Tar bridge across Mapusa river has been cast, raising hopes that the bridge will be thrown open for traffic any time after May 15.
The opening of the bridge is also expected to reduce the ongoing traffic congestion taking place around the church.
The General Manager of Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), Jude Carvalho informed that it takes at least 14 to 15 days for curing of the slab after which the bridge could be thrown open for traffic.
In the meantime, he said, work on other allied jobs like installation of crash barriers, construction of footpaths and approach roads will be taken up and completed.
Once the bridge is thrown open for the public, the contractor will take up the job to clear all the debris that was dumped in the river including the temporary road and restore the river to its earlier position.
The work on the 40 metre long bridge costing around Rs 10.30 crore started in November last year and carried an eight-month deadline for its completion.
The four-lane composite bridge across Mapusa River will have one-metre footpaths on either side.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had laid the foundation stone for construction of the bridge in November end last year and work on the bridge began soon thereafter.
The old single lane Tar Bridge was later demolished to make way for the new four-lane bridge.
