No facility for Raia locals to pay power bills

Once again, Raia power consumers will have to travel all the way to the Aquem Power House to pay power bills for want of a cash collection point in the village. While the Raia village panchayat had last month agreed to make available space for the electricity department to accept bill payments for the benefit of the villagers, the latter has so far failed to post any staff for the collection of cash payment.

Former Raia Sarpanch Xavier Fernandes lashed out at the power department for its failure to work out a mechanism to save consumers a trip to Margao to pay their bills. “We had raised the issue last month when the local bank which was accepting the bills suddenly stopped the cash payment facility. People of
Raia village are mostly rural folks and most of them make cash payments. It is surprising that the power department has failed to respond to the villagers’ demand for a facility in the village panchayat ghar,” Xavier said, while adding that the department has not acted even though the panchayat had agreed to allot space for the cash collection. Local resident Anthony Fernandes echoed similar sentiments.
He pointed out that the power department has ignored the demand of the local populace and failed to open a cash collection facility in the panchayat ghar. He also criticized the power department for not responding promptly to the calls made by the consumers in this regard. When The Goan contacted
senior power officials, they pointed out that there is no response to the proposal sent to the headquarters in Panaji for opening of a cash collection centre at the panchayat office. “For now, it appears Raia locals
will have to travel to Margao to pay their power bills.”
