Norwegian Foreign Minister opens Mumbai Consulate-General

In an attempt to bolster ties between India and Norway, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reopened their Consulate-General office in Mumbai. The office will facilitate services particularly in Maharashtra, Gujarat & Goa.

The inauguration was done by Børge Brende, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Norway, in the presence of Norwegian Ambassador to India H.E. Nils Ragnar Kamsvåg & the new Consul-General of Norway to Mumbai, Torbjørn Holthe.

Norway’s first Consulate in Mumbai was established in 1857, but was closed down in 1973. The former Consulate-General was established to serve traditional Norwegian shipping and maritime trade interests.

During the inauguration, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Brende said, “Norwegian companies are bullish about the prospects for the Indian economy and want to make in India, both on-shore and off-shore. With the economic growth that we are now witnessing here, it is important for Norway to increase its engagement with the Indian society and with its businesses.”

Norway being the second largest exporter of seafood globally, also organized Seafood Industry & Ocean Industry seminars, in order to look into varied opportunities available in the growing Indian market. Studies estimate that the export has increased by 7 percent to USD 450 million the last year (September to September).

As the second largest exporter of seafood globally, Norwegian exporters cater to markets all over the world. Now, they are looking towards the promising and growing Indian market

The re-opening marked the official Norwegian presence in Mumbai the youngest and oldest at the same time. Norwegian Consul General Torbjørn Holthe will head the renewed Consulate General in Mumbai.
