Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira on Friday raised concern over rising incidents wherein meat is seized by authorities following allegations of illegalities including hygiene violations without the presence of a veterinary officer calling it illegal.
“Under the existing law only a veterinary doctor has the powers to take action,” Alvares Ferreira said, adding that “fringe elements” are instrumental in instigating the authorities regarding meat seizures particularly during feasts and festivals causing a shortage in the markets when demand is high.
Citing a recent incident in Mapusa, Alvares Ferreira said some ‘fringe elements’ forced the police to enter an individual’s home on allegations that he had beef in the house which turned out to be false.
“This matter has gone to court. But the whole action lacked sanctity since there was no veterinary officer in the raiding party. The police’s actions were wrong which will fall flat in the courts,” Alvares Ferreira said.
