Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday assured the Goa Legislative Assembly that the government will take immediate steps to address the acute shortage of beds at the South Goa District Hospital (SGDH).
“I will look into it. Instructions will be issued to the Director of Health Services to take necessary action to increase the number of beds in the district hospital,” Sawant said, responding to concerns raised during the Assembly session.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao and Goa Forward Party MLA Vijai Sardesai both flagged the poor condition of SGDH, particularly in the medicine ward, where a severe shortage of beds continues to impact patient care.
Alemao, while displaying a copy of Thursday’s edition of The Goan newspaper in the House, referred to a report highlighting the grim situation at the hospital.
“There is growing anxiety among the public due to the ongoing shortage of beds in both the male and female medicine wards. Patients are being treated on stretchers and even wheelchairs. This is a pathetic and unacceptable condition for any district hospital,” Alemao said, urging the government to act swiftly.
Echoing similar concerns, Sardesai pointed to the overall shortfall of infrastructure and essential facilities at the hospital, demanding an urgent intervention.
The Chief Minister’s assurance comes amid rising public frustration over the lack of basic healthcare infrastructure in South Goa’s largest government-run hospital.
