An online signature petition has been launched urging the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur to “Keep FM Rainbow Goa on AIR”.
The petition ‘Save FM Rainbow Goa’ launched by a listener Priya Naik has garnered 4,684 signatures from radio enthusiasts in just three days of its launch on September 10.
As reported earlier, All India Radio, now known as Akashvani, will be shutting down FM Rainbow, following directions from the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. The Ministry decided to shut down FM Rainbow stations in different parts of the country including Goa.
“FM Rainbow Goa was, is, and will always be a part of Goa’s culture. I have grown up listening to FM Rainbow since I was a child. Now, living outside Goa, this channel has been my only true connection to my homeland and its wonderful and diverse culture and music,” the petitioner said.
“Listeners enjoy the tunes and talks by prominent as well as local Goans only through this amazing channel. This is the only Goan radio channel that has been connecting Goans to Goa. Losing this channel to the merger with Mhadei is a tremendous loss to Goans around the world,” she said.
Naik has appealed Goan to sign the petition is large to stop the closer of FM Rainbow.
While signing the petition in large, radio enthusiasts have commented.
“Please don’t kill the Radio Star @FMRAINBOWGOA,” said Savio Gomes.
“FM has been oldest radio channel and has got many fond memories. Please don’t close it,” appealed Poorva Kamat.
“I believe this channel connects Goans globally. Hence should not be merged with Mhadei,” said Bhaskar Nayak.
All India Radio started FM in Goa in the early 1990s. By an order issued by the Akashvani directorate, the popular FM Rainbow will be merged with the primary Mhadei channel on medium wave; several programmes on FM will see a closure or a shift in their timings.
