Mapusa police have booked an offence against a gang of about 20 persons on charges of assaulting a man and his pregnant wife in connection with a road rage incident at Bastora on Monday night.

The family of the victims have claimed that the gang includes a policeman, an electricity worker and a lawyer.

According to the complaint, the incident took place on the Moira road near Tar-Bastora at about 8.30 pm and the victims, Vivek Shirodkar and his wife, Shruti, run a chicken shawarma stall in their vehicle near Tar Bastora.

Earlier in the morning, there was an argument between Vivek and the accused over the vehicle being parked by the roadside in Moira.

Later at night, the suspects arrived in three to four vehicles and confronted Vivek at the stall, before allegedly abusing and assaulting him.

Shruti, who is pregnant, had gone to save her husband when she was also assaulted. The accused later fled the scene.

After the incident, both the injured couple were admitted to the district hospital for treatment at night. Vivek was referred to GMC hospital and was discharged on Tuesday morning. Later, both the injured were admitted to a private hospital.

On Tuesday, the family of the victims went to the Mapusa police station to enquire about the investigations into the case.

Later speaking to reporters, the family said they had received a call from one person requesting to settle the matter amicably.

“We have given his name and the names of two more persons, all residents of Moira, to the police. The accused include 2-3 policemen, an electricity worker, and a lawyer. If the police ignore this matter, we will complain to the Goa Human Rights Commission. We will also identify the names of those who called us to resolve this matter,” said a family member.

“Since some police are involved in the assault case, it is not right for the Mapusa police to be investigating the case. We will not settle this matter by conciliation.”

Mapusa police have registered a case against 20-25 unknown persons and further investigation is being conducted by Mapusa Police Sub-Inspector Bablo Parab.
