MMC acts after pollution board’s notice to clean up site

The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has floated a tender of Rs 18.45 lakh to collect all garbage dumped on the Assagao plateau and to cover it with tarpaulin.
On 10 October 2024, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) inspected the garbage dumping site at Assagao plateau in the presence of officials of the Assagao Comunidade and MMC.
The GSPCB had directed the MMC not to dump garbage on the Assagao plateau, but when this activity continued, the Assagao Comunidade brought the matter to the notice of the GSPCB.
The MMC was then served a notice for illegally dumping garbage on the property of Assagao Comunidade.
The MMC was later directed to stop dumping garbage at the Assagao site, to collect the dumped garbage in a single heap, and to cover it with tarpaulin sheets.
The MMC discussed the matter at its council meeting last month and has floated two tenders worth Rs 18.45 lakh, which include the supply of excavators worth approximately Rs 4.02 lakh and tarpaulin sheets worth approximately Rs 14.43 lakh to cover the garbage. The time to complete the work is 30 days.
