Partly cloudy skies offer no relief from heat

Parts of Goa saw partly cloudy skies on Monday, with some areas experiencing light rain and thunderstorms.

However, the cloud cover did not bring any relief from the heat. The maximum temperature touched 35.2 Celsius — about 1.3 degrees above normal. Due to high humidity, the ‘feels-like’ temperature rose to around 45 Celsius.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Goa, light to moderate rain is likely in both North and South Goa during the evenings up to May 14.

Isolated places may also see light thundershowers during this time.

From May 15 to 16, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy across the state, with no major change in temperature.

Meanwhile, the IMD reported fairly widespread rain, with isolated heavy showers, over the Nicobar Islands in the past 24 hours.

Rainfall in that area is likely to increase and become widespread, with some places receiving heavy to very heavy rain in the next 24 hours.

These changes indicate favourable conditions for the southwest monsoon to begin over parts of the Andaman Sea, South Bay of Bengal, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands by Tuesday, May 13.

The monsoon is also expected to move further into parts of the south Arabian Sea, the Maldives-Comorin region, more areas of the South Bay of Bengal, the entire Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and parts of the central Bay of Bengal over the next four to five days.

An active weather system, known as a trough, located 3.1 kilometres above sea level from Saurashtra to the east-central Arabian Sea, is also affecting these weather patterns.

The IMD has already predicted that Goa and the rest of the region are likely to receive above-normal rainfall this southwest monsoon season, with total rainfall expected to be 105 percent of the Long Period Average (LPA).
