After many twists and turns into the death of BJP leader Sonali Phogat, the Anjuna police arrested her personal assistant Sudhir Sangwan and her friend Sukhwinder Singh on charges of murder.
Their arrest was highly expected after the police registered First Information Report (FIR) under sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code against the men on Thursday afternoon.
The accused was later taken to the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for examination, a mandatory protocol to be followed during an arrest. Their resort rooms were also checked to collect evidence pertaining to the case.
While an official comment was awaited until late evening, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Anjuna) Jivba Dalvi earlier confirmed registering an offense against the duo based on allegations by Sonali’s family. The investigation team has already taken possession of the CCTV footage from two prime locations – Curlies beach shack restaurant, and the resort where she booked her stay for three days from Aug 22-24, 2022.
“The family complained she was murdered. Therefore, the case of unnatural death has been converted to murder FIR. We are now probing the murder angle. The suspects will be interrogated,” an officer told The Goan.
The videos are also being examined wherein Sonali and her team were dining at Curlies and later the men allegedly accosted the ‘unwell’ politician for medical attention.
