A youth was killed while another was seriously injured after they were involved in a road mishap near Vidhya Mandir School at Chicalim.

Eyewitnesses claimed two motorcycles were racing when one motorcycle rammed into the rear of a car before hitting a road divider and killing Sohail Khan (18) of Baina on the spot while seriously injuring the rider.

According to eyewitness, two KTM motorcycles, one registered in Goa and the other in Kerala, were seen racing through heavy traffic at Chicalim on Tuesday afternoon and missed crashing into many vehicles along the way.

Shabid Shaikh was riding the Goa registration KTM motorcycle (GA-06-R-8683) and Sohail Khan was the pillion rider, while it was not known who was riding the Kerala-registered KTM motorcycle.

An eyewitness informed that as the two bikes reached the Vidhya Mandir school junction, they came across a tourist taxi proceeding to the airport and both motorcycles tried to zoom past from both sides of the car in an attempt to overtake it.

While the Kerala-registered motorcycle overtook from the left side of the car, the Goa-registered motorcycle tried to overtake from the narrow space on the right side of the car, but crashed into the rear and hit the road divider.

An eyewitness, Preetam Keluskar, said the two motorcycles had missed crashing into his car at the Chicalim junction. “When I reached the accident site, the Kerala-registered bike was nowhere to be seen while the two riders of the Goa-registered motorcycle were fallen on the road. We immediately called the 108 ambulance, but they did not reach in time.”

One passers-by took the severely injured pillion rider Sohail Khan to a private hospital in the vicinity, while the rider Shabid Shaikh was rushed to the Chicalim Cottage Hospital by taxi,” said Keluskar.

Wilson Souza, who had rushed Sohail to the private hospital, informed the media that doctors had declared Sohail dead on arrival.

According to sources, Shabid Shaikh was rushed to Chicalim Cottage Hospital but as his condition was critical, he was later shifted to GMC hospital.

Till late evening, the identity of the Kerala-registered motorcycle and its rider was unknown and Vasco police is investigating the case.
