Road mishap triggers outrage over excavations in Valpoi

A two-wheeler fell into one of the excavated pits, causing the accident.

VALPOI
A rider escaped with minor injuries after his two-wheeler fell into a pit dug on the Valpoi–Honda road near a new petrol pump on Saturday morning, triggering public anger over frequent accidents in Valpoi due to unplanned road excavation works.

Locals claim motorists and pedestrians are bearing the brunt as no government machinery appears to be taking the issue seriously.

Roads across Valpoi municipal area have repeatedly been dug up over the past six months to lay underground power and water pipelines. This has created major inconvenience for residents, and in many places the roads have become narrow, causing significant hardship to motorists and pedestrians alike.

Large pits being dug in the middle of roads have posed serious risks for vehicle users. Despite several accidents reported in recent months, citizens allege that no concrete steps have been taken by the authorities.

In Saturday’s incident, the rider failed to notice the excavated pit in front of the new petrol pump, causing the two-wheeler to fall directly into it. Although the rider sustained only minor injuries, the incident sparked strong reactions, with one resident questioning, “Is there no one responsible for Valpoi city?”

While some stretches have been temporarily asphalted, problems persist across the town. Many areas still have open pits, continuously raising the risk of accidents.

Citizens claim that despite the serious situation prevailing for the last six months, no government agency appears to be effectively addressing the issue.

Sources said Valpoi Municipal Council lacks proper information about these works, resulting in inaction.

Officials from the PWD stated that the department had also not been informed about these works, and therefore had no details regarding where and what kind of work was being carried out. This has led residents to question who exactly is monitoring these works.
