Dr Raikar inspects healthcare facilities at Canacona CHC
CANACONA: Acting on directives of Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, Dr Kedar Raikar visited the Canacona Community Health Centre on Wednesday to inspect healthcare facilities and identify areas which need improvement at the lone government hospital in the taluka.
Rane had instructed Dr Raikar to prepare a report on the status of existing facilities, medics and staff strength and status of medicines and other lifesaving drugs.
On Wednesday, Dr Raikar inspected the various wards, the medical equipment, collected information about the staff shortage, including the specialised doctors and other medical officers. He also noted the limited facilities for patients in the taluka. People have been frequently demanding 24-hours facilities for blood tests, X-Ray, setting up of a blood bank, etc.
They have also claimed that while the CHC officially has a trauma unit, an operation theatre, an x-ray unit, and a cardiac-care van, none of these facilities work properly and patients are immediately shifted to District Hospital, Margao or GMC hospital at Bambolim.
There is no obstetrician, paediatrician, orthopaedic specialist, and full-time cardiologist in the CHC hospital. There are x-ray, sonography machines but not enough technicians/experts to operate these machines 24x7.
They have demanded an adequate number of doctors, specialists, radiologist, lab assistants, technicians to Canacona Community Health Centre (CHC) and upgrading the CHC to a Sub-District Hospital.
People have also sought accommodation facilities for doctors/medical staff at the lone government hospital in the southernmost taluka of the State.
