Two Mumbai-based youths Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandes were brutally killed last year
The trial in the sensational murder of two Mumbai-basedyouths Keenan Santos and Reuben Fernandes – who were brutally killed last yearby a group of goons – is expected to start before a special Mumbai court inDecember.
The two were attacked near Amboli Bar and Kitchen at Andherihere – while they protested against the eve teasing of their female companions.While Santos (24) died on October 20, 2011 the day of the incident, Fernandes(29) succumbed to wounds on October 31. They were stabbed and attacked withknives, stumps and wooden sticks by a group of youth from the same locality.
On October 24, the court had framed charges against fouraccused - Sunil Bodh, Jitendra Rana, Dipak Tival and Satish Dulhaj.
On October 20, the group of seven had gone to enjoy theIndia-England ODI at a Amboli Bar and Kitchen, a bar-cum-restaurant at Andherisuburbs here.
After the match the group stopped at a paan shop justoutside the restaurant, where three men led by one Jitendra Rana startedpassing lewd comments about the women in the group. Santos and Fernandesconfronted Rana and his friends and shooed them away. But minutes later, Ranareturned with a group. Santos was stabbed in the abdomen and Fernandes wasbeaten with bamboo sticks and stabbed. Both Santos and Fernandes had put up abrave defence. The incident has taken place between 2200 hrs and 2230 hrs.While they were attacked, there was no help from the passerbys, onlookers orfor that matter the staff of the restaurant did not come out in their support.
After the incident, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan andHome Minister R R Patil had assured that they would be tried in a specialcourt. The investigations were carried out by the DN Nagar Road police station.The shocking incident made national headlines and there were several protestsand candle-light vigils highlighting the issue of safety of women in thiscommercial capital.
