Before the meteoric arrival of electronic dance music and the series of EDM shows across Goa during the months of December and January, Goa was perhaps the capital of ballroom dancing in the country.
Essentially, ballroom dancing is a formal dance performance by a couple by adhering to various styles of dancing cha cha cha, jive, salsa/samba, viennese waltz, foxtrot and tango dance forms. Remember Richard Gere in the movie ‘Shall We Dance’? Yeah… just that.
Ballroom dancing has been an essential part of a Goan Christian popular culture especially weddings, when the bride, groom and sundry indulge in a spot of dancing dressed in their finest to music performed by a live band.
With ball room dancing being such an intrinsic part of the popular culture here, there are several ballroom dancing workshops which you can sign up to learn the fine art. One such, is Dr. Martin and Dance Illusions Team which will be starting a Summer Special ballroom batch, basic social level dance classes for 5 consecutive Sundays. Students will get to learn cha cha cha, jive, salsa/samba, Viennese waltz, foxtrot and tango.
