In 2006 Cdr. Dilip Dhonde became the first Indian to solo circumnavigate the world in a sailboat which was also build in India, Goa to be specific. The feat is considered special because, while 600 astronauts and 5000 Everst climbers have achieved the same feat, only 170 persons have walked, or rather sailed in the path which Donde eventually did.

Donde did not stop there. On completion of his path breaking voyage, he continued sailing and grooming the next generation, participating in two races from Cape Town to Rio with novice crews and the Transatlantic race 2015 from USA to UK. He mentored fellow naval officer, Lt Cdr Abhilash Tomy, to raise the bar and successfully complete the first solo nonstop circumnavigation under sail by an Indian. He has since trained, among others, an all women crew of naval officers who recently undertook a sail from Visakhapatnam to Goa; another first for the country.

Donde will speak about his fascinating voyage and the experiences which he encountered during his journey around the globe at an event at @ 6 Assagao, Cursino Villa, House 6 on Monday at 8 pm.

He is also the recipient of the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award, the Shaurya Chakra, the MacGregor Medal and the National Maritime Achievement Award.
