Chief Cardiac Surgeon of the KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital Dr Richard Saldanha has appealed to citizens, especially science teachers and students, to have the knowledge of Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedure.

“This is a life-saving technique that is performed during the time of emergency when the patient lies unconscious and under cardiac arrest and in an emergency when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped,” Dr Saldanha said.

He was addressing science teachers on the occasion of World Heart Day. The training programme was jointly hosted by the Indian Association of Cardio-Vascular Surgeons, Department of Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery & Anesthesiology.

“Science teachers must know the technique of CPR which could save a life in case of emergency. We witness someone get unconscious or become breathless due to a heart attack, drowning, or in an accident. CPR has to be initiated immediately and once a person regains consciousness, the individual should be shifted to hospital immediately,” Dr Saldanha said.

Anesthesiologist Dr Raghavendra gave step-by-step methods of CPR & how it can reboot (re-start) the heart.

“Ask the person if he/she is OK. However, if found unconscious person should be shifted to a safe place, an ambulance should be arranged, and about 100-120 chest compressions be made at a designated place of chest,” Dr Raghavendra said.

Dr Dharigol and Dr Vinayak demonstrated the finer skills of CPR on a mannequin. Hand-on training practice, which included sitting position, using heal of the palm for compression of the chest, and locking the fingers all other techniques were shared.

Dr Jyoti Kawalekar, Principal of RL Science College, Dr Mohan Gan, Dr Darshan and over 100 science teachers attended the CPR training.
