Since conditions like stagnant water and damp weather in the monsoon are ideal conditions for malaria and dengue virus to grow and proliferate, the authorities have begun taking preemptive steps within the PHC compound.
As a precautionary measure, the health officials have begun fogging and carrying out anti-larval measures in the compound.
“We are carrying out anti-larval spray once a week so that mosquitoes do not breed. There is rise in mosquitoes which is normal in this season, but so far there are no signs of mosquito breeding. But we cannot take chances,” said Dr Manish Gavnekar, Medical Officer and in-charge at the PHC.
Fingers are being pointed to a huge dump of accidental two-wheelers that have been discarded in the compound of the PHC for the rise of mosquitoes.
The police department had shifted the two-wheelers in the compound of the Aldona PHC when work on the new police station was taken up in Mapusa some years back.
The broken and open two-wheeler tanks and punctured tyres make it a perfect ground for the mosquitoes to breed.
The electricity department has also dumped a lot of unused material within the PHC compound, contributing to the growth of mosquitoes.
Anticipating the mosquito menace, the PHC officials had written a number of letters to the police department requesting it to shift the two-wheelers. But their appeals appear to have fallen on deaf ears.
“We had written letters to Mapusa Police on a number of occasions. They had promised to remove the two-wheelers but so far nothing has been done,” Dr Gavnekar said.
Coincidentally, the Aldona Police Outpost and the electricity department office are housed within the Aldona PHC compound.
A police official at the Aldona Police Outpost said the department was in the process of shifting the two-wheelers.
“We are trying to identify the owners of the bikes, which is taking time. Some two-wheelers have been taken and some more will also be shifted very soon,” the police official said.
