Velsao Sports & Cultural Club overcame Mormugao United Cultural & Sports Club 1-0 in the GFA Second Division League tie (Mormugao Zone) at Velsao grounds on Wednesday.

In the first half, Mormugao had the better share of exchanges as striker Rahul Naik took control of the ball from Sachin Borkar, but the latter failed to make any positive impact as he shot wide in the 4th minute.Lenny Fernandes,defender of Velsao, was at his best as he avoided Terence Fernandes of Mormugao on the top of their box in the 6th minute.
Cansio the left striker of Velsao sent in two fine passes to Richard Rodrigues but the latter’s moves were tackled by Kevin Barretto,defender of Mormugao in the 12th and 14th minute.
In the 26th minute,the real chance one can say to put pressure on Velsao,fell on Cansio Soares legs who dribbled past Kevin Barreto and Terrance Fernandes, both of Mormugao, but his left-footed effort was brilliantly saved by Darshan Ambore,keeper of Mormugao. In the 46th minute, Cansio Soares of Velsao put in an energetic effort from the left flank and his cross was flicked by Lenny Fernandes and crossed to Richard,who shot wide.
Richard Rodrigues slammed into the Mormugao net a power-packed shot and opened the account for Velsao in the 56th minute off an assist from Cansio Soares. After that the defensive wall of Velsao guarded their fort till the end of the match.
In a Salcete Zone match, Cuncolim Union produced a commanding display to rout Fr Agnel Youth Sports Club, Paroda 5-0 at Governmnet School playgrounds, Cuncolim. Cuncolim Union led 1-0 at the breather. The highlight of the day was a brilliant brace by Necil Presley Pinto. Backed by the voiceferous home crowd, Cuncolim Union dominated the procedings and pushed their oppoents on the back foot but could not score goals in the intial period due to some inept shooting by their forwards. Cuncolim Union’s breakthough came inthe 7th minute when in-form striker Necil Pinto slotted past the rival goalkeeper a snap shot off a pass from Samson Simoes. At the other end, Fr Agnel Youth Sports Club had to struggle to contain the rival forwards and had a few scoring chances but their forwards shot wide from close range.
The second half was no different as Fr Agnel Youth Sports Club continued their dominance with Caetano Fernandes adding his name to the scorers’ list with a strike in the 47th minute. I
n the 67th minute, Nash Pereira put the issue beyond doubt when he dribbled a host of defenders and unleashed a stiff shot which crashed into the net. Relentless Cuncolim Union then piled on the misery with Presely Pinto scoring back to back goals late in the second half with strikes in the 76th and 78th minute.
At Goa Velha, Odxel Sports Club defeated Football Club of Neura 5-3. The winners scored through Vikrant Mangueshkar (36,52), Varcimung Z(63) and Vishal Kankonkar (80, 90+3). Neura reduced through Anthony Afonso (42), Dinesh Shirodkar (63) and Atish Madkaikar (86).
