Virar-Alibaug project gets a push

The Multi-Modal Corridor to provide fastest and convenient route

The Maharashtra government is giving a major push to themuch-awaited Virar-Alibaug multi-modal corridor project. The project willbenefit the coastal Konkan region.

At the meetings of the Mumbai Metropolitan RegionDevelopment Authority (MMRDA) presided over by Chief Minister PrithvirajChavan, who is also the Chairman, has set aside Rs 50 crore for the nextfinancial year.

The 126-km long multi-modal corridor will run from Virar(Navghar) to Alibaug. The corridor is being implemented in two phases – fromVirar (Navghar) to Chirner (79 km) and Chirner to Alibaug (47 km). The MMRDAhas already finalized preliminary plans through techno-economic feasibilitystudy and the same are being included in the Regional Transport Road Map.

The Rs 9,326-crore corridor will – besides the main trafficlanes – have dedicated lanes for buses, two-wheelers and non-motorizedtransport, official sources said.

As per the design, the corridor would be aimed to providethe vehicular speed of 120km/hour. The project planning consultants is TheLouis Berger & Group, Inc. 

Currently, all other routes take about 3 to 5 hours to coverthe distance. Therefore, the proposed Multi-Modal Corridor would providefastest and convenient route for the commuters between Gujarat, Mumbai towardsNashik, Pune, Goa Highway, Alibaug and even Navi Mumbai saving time, fuel andpressure on existing roadways.

The Corridor proposed from Diva-Vasai rail line intersectionon NH-8 up to Alibaug would cover a distance of about 140km. The route wouldenable to cover the distance just little more than an hour. The other existingroutes for the same destination include an intersection from NH-8 towardsBhiwandi via Kalyan towards Panvel.

Another route is the diversion from Thane-Ghodbundar road atNH-8 towards Thane and then Panvel via Navi Mumbai. Third route is from Mumbaicity to Eastern Express Highway up to Navi Mumbai and Panvel.
