Kuch Kuch Hota Hai which was released in 1998 went on to become a blockbuster and Karan Johar who made his Bollywood debut became an instant hit. However, the director revealed that he had a tough time casting for Salman Khan and Rani Mukherji's role. "I had a lot of trouble while casting for Rani's part. I had approached eight heroines and no one agreed (for the role). I became like a beggar," he said . "Even for Salman Khan's part, I had to roam here and there.” The director further revealed that he even thought of wearing a short skirt and doing Rani's role if no one did it. But on Aditya Chopra amd SRK's suugestion he approached Rani Mukherjee and things worked out.
